Create Bold Characters and Develop Your Own Visual Style
In this illustration workshop, participants will explore the foundations of anime and manga while developing original characters of their own. Through guided exercises, they will experiment with facial features, expressions, hairstyles, costumes, proportions, and dynamic poses to understand how visual choices shape personality and mood.
Participants will also look at how line, silhouette, gesture, and design language create a strong and recognizable style. Rather than simply copying existing characters, they will remix what they learn into new ideas, refine their designs, and begin building a personal visual voice.
Materials
All materials will be provided. Participants will work with: Graphite pencils and erasers, black drawing pens, coloured pencils and markers, sketch paper, heavier drawing paper for finished illustrations.

Joshua Eliaou Tuil
Joshua Tuil is a figurative artist, caricaturist, and creative mentor based in Nanaimo, BC. With experience teaching children, teens, and adults, he helps students build strong drawing fundamentals, confidence, and their own creative voice. His teaching combines clear professional guidance with a warm, flexible, and encouraging approach that supports different abilities and learning styles. Josh uses drawing not only as an artistic skill, but also as a tool for observation, storytelling, problem-solving, and self-expression.
