Welcome to 2026
Chinese New Year is celebrated as the “Year of the Horse”, more specifically the Fire Horse. This sign is associated with energy, passion, and forward movement. These qualities are a fitting description for the year ahead for the Arts Council of Ladysmith.
Embracing Change and Opportunity
2026 promises to be a year of significant transformation, offering new opportunities and requiring dedicated effort. We are committed to creating exceptional spaces including a classroom, a printmakers’ studio, and an interpretive centre designed for large installations and storytelling through art.
Grant Applications and Funding Initiatives
Our grant writer, Carmen Hildabrand, Ora Steyn and I have already applied for two infrastructure grants, with outcomes expected in March. In addition, we are using our new grant writing software, SmartGrant, an interactive online tool tailored for British Columbia artists and arts and cultural organizations, Carmen Hildabrand has prioritized key funding opportunities and developed a timeline for submissions.
Gallery Updates and Retail Experience
If you have not visited the downtown gallery recently, you will notice a new configuration. We have relocated the boutique to enhance the retail experience for our visitors. In 2025 , boutique sales totalled $34,000 and art sales reached $4,500. We extend our gratitude to our volunteers, Francesca Reside and Sophie Paisley, for their outstanding marketing efforts. Special thanks to Francesca for securing new marketing funds through Cowichan Tourism grants, and to Kathy Holmes, our Boutique Manager, for her dedication in keeping the boutique vibrant and engaging.
Launch of a new web site
Chris Earl and Ora Steyn with our vendor “Geeks on the Beach” will launch improvements to our website you will start those improvements by March.
Fundraising Success and Ongoing Campaigns
Our matching fund campaign successfully met its targets, raising a total of $20,000. We appreciate the contributions of Kim Perry and Kirsty Henderson in this achievement. Fundraising activities will continue throughout the year, with an event featuring Ryan McMann at the end of January. In addition, we are launching a GoFundMe campaign this month under the theme “Reimagine the Arts and Heritage Hub”. Looking ahead to March, we will host an art auction with further details to be announced and a Business after Business on March 16 with the Chamber of Commerce. The fundraising committee—Kim Perry, Lorna Beecroft, Kathy Holmes, Colleen Youngblutt, and Andrea Rosato Taylor—is developing initiatives for each month this year to maintain momentum and engagement.
Our Goal for 2026
We remain focused on reaching our first phase target of $200,000. By mid year. Your continued
support is vital in helping us realize the vision of a dynamic new art space for our community
and region.
