New to watercolor? We will explore and study the most relevant techniques in contemporary watercolor , washes, brushwork, textures, mixing colors. We will create simple glowing landscapes, color swatches, and florals. The goal this term is to have fun exploring this versatile and challenging medium. Step by step examples of drawing, brushwork and color choices will be given to help you discover your process.

Suggested supplies:

1. Board for painting – a 1/4 ” birch or wooden board is the best – about 15 x 24 inches.

2. 140 lb cold press watercolor paper – Arches, Fabriano Strathmore, are very good.  Nice to have some inexpensive paper as well for quick studies.

3.  Blue or green painter’s tape

4.  Pencil and eraser

5.  Watercolor brushes – a wash brush 1 inch wide, some flat brushes of different sizes, one good # 12 round tipped brush, an oriental style brush is very good, a detail brush which is the smaller size as well.  Please note there are many brushes here for you to try.

6.  Watercolor paints – good quality please in tube form. Cotman brand is not too expensive and has a good pigment load.  They often come in sets, or you can buy a yellow, red and blue, and burnt sienna as shown to start with. Other brands are Van Gogh, Lucas, Grumbacher, Stevenson.  Please do not buy a children’s or dollar store set.  Good quality paint and paper are essential for success.

Josslyn Meyers

Josslyn grew up on the prairies and found herself inspired by the big sky vistas, Parkland forests and lakes. During her BFA days, she was deeply inspired my the many landscape artists who expressed heartfelt emotions and created unique and authentic worlds through their art.

It is her goal to do the same. She love the immediacy and freshness of watercolour, and the transformation and textures of washi collage. It is her intent that my drawings, prints and paintings be celebrations of nature that bring a sense of peace and wonder to her viewers, that instill a feeling of connection with nature, of spirit, and of honouring our place within it.

Josslyn enjoys sharing her artistic experience and passion with artists of all levels through her classes with Ladysmith Arts.
