In this month's exhibit, Sarah Leo shares a lovely interpretation of our theme 'Local Treasures'.
She writes, "The design for this jacket was inspired by some of my favourite people and places in our Gilmore Girls-meets-coastal town, because I’ve always found Ladysmith to be incredibly charming. When I saw that the gallery’s August show was about Local Treasures, I got to work highlighting a few of the things I love and treasure about where I live. Namely, Geoff Cram’s Old Town Bakery in its delicious everything, including cinnamon buns; how Ladysmith is a popular small-town destination location for film and TV, the oceanic nostalgia I feel about every part of Transfer Beach, the Purple Martins who travel up to 7,000 miles to South America and back to reside on Ladysmith docks, and how the Arts Council of Ladysmith and District has continually supported me as an artist, musician and poet. I’m grateful for every kind person I’ve met and all the amazing memories we’ve made under Ladysmith’s vivid sunset skies."
Sarah's piece "Ladysmith Charm" can be viewed in the Downtown Ladysmith Art Gallery until August 21st.
About the Artist
Sarah Leo is a multidisciplinary artist, professional musician, and author from Ladysmith, B.C., whose passion for the beauty of everyday life and connection has vibrantly informed her creative pursuits. A few of her favourite things are sunlit walks to Spotify playlists, spending time with the people she loves, and working on her passions as a full-time artist. Sarah grew up on the golden prairie fields of Alberta listening to stories her Italian family would tell, and later found herself exploring the depths of all meaning, and storytelling in multiple mediums. Sarah has a VIU Bachelor of Arts degree in Visual Arts and English, and a Bachelor of Education degree in high school teaching, an education that helped Sarah create more art to empower, uplift, and inspire youth.
